The main goal of this book is
to help those who are studying Japanese as a second language. For this reason,
the book is centered on a specific Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT)
level. This first book, of the Japanese Kanji Mnemonics Series, focuses on the
103 Japanese characters (kanji) found on the N5 level test and it assumes the
reader has knowledge of the two Japanese alphabets (Hiragana and Katakana).

Great for the beginner or someone like I who studied on and off again, but never quite stayed with it. This first book covers the 103 kanji most likely needed for the JLPT N5. The book is well thought out and the first thing I like about it is that the kanji are grouped by meaning or usage instead of simply a long list by complexity. The mnemonic tips are helpful even if I can’t see the same picture meaning. It seemed awkward at first to have to flip the page at first to see the On/Kun reading, definition, common uses, stroke order instead of in an open book format. But then, it made it better for quizzing myself like flashcards in a book format. Five stars!
